New feature: New measures to deal with spam

November 1st, 2007

Thoof users may have noticed a marked increase in low-quality “spam” stories over the past few weeks. While our targeting algorithm does identify and bias against such stories, the shier volume of them resulted in many of them being visible for quite a while. So we have implemented some more aggressive anti-spam measures, to identify both spam stories, and users with a track-record of submitting spam.

We are happy that many people have identified Thoof as a good source of traffic, but we are only interested in sending traffic to those that have earned it by providing interesting content. This doesn’t include blatantly promotional posts (ie. “Isn’t our website great!!”), or posts to blogs which simply embed or link elsewhere without adding any real value.

You can help this process by using the “mark as” drop down on stories to mark such stories as “spam”.

We hope that you see an immediate improvement in story quality, please post comments and feedback below.

Something is really borked at the backend. All I see now is celebrity trash, dating advice, lol catz and other blog spam.

When I mark an article as “not interested” the article appears again when I refresh the page.

I have two streams defined: technology and business, but I get links to the big fat ass of Jeniffer Love Hewitt (though she is cute, I hardly think the post is in the tech or business streams), shaving dogs to look like lions, Jamie Lynn Spears Decides Against Abortion - Papa Don’t Preach!, etc.

I cannot find a place to contact Thoof apart from this Blog.

I need to find a way to resubmit the confirmation email. I havent got my confirmation email yet and it’s already a day.

Is there a way for this?
How can I contact you to tell you my email for Thoof?

Ron, your comment is 3 months old so I don’t think it matters now… but you should have looked in the FAQ:

* General feedback
Please email feedback@thoof.com if you have suggestions, complaints, or any other feedback about Thoof.
* Media contact
Josh Morgan, Morgan/Dorado PR, email: josh@morgandorado.com, phone: 916.941.0901

This information might have been added after you posted your comment, if so.. maybe this will help someone else that’s looking for the information.

Enjoy.
