Thoof rating system for your blog

July 17th, 2007

As we start to move beyond the core site features, we’re always looking for ways to enhance Thoof for everyone. Today, we’d like your feedback about a feature we’ll be rolling out for bloggers; a rating of your story, a sort of “ThoofRank” if you will.

We have the ability to quantify this rating in a number of ways, and would like some feedback as to which you’d like to see as posters and bloggers:

  1. A single, numerical ThoofRank, where the number indicates the percentage of Thoof stories your story is better than
  2. A top Thoof story this (day/week/month), displaying that your story is in the top X percent in the most brag-worthy time period (e.g. top 5% this month is more worthwhile than top 5% today)
  3. A combination of the two, displaying #1 unless your story is in a Top N% rank, then displaying #2.

In any case this would be a small widget you could post on your own site, which would be updated automatically. What do you think?  Please feel free to explain your vote in a comment.

Which style Thoof widget?

  • Option 3 (ThoofRank unless Top N%) (57%, 16 Votes)
  • Option 1 (ThoofRank only) (36%, 10 Votes)
  • Option 2 (Top N% only) (7%, 2 Votes)

I absolutely love thoof, I would love to have a widget either way. Of the three options they all sound pretty cool. I’d go with #1 because it is simple and then roll out #2 and or #3 later on as an option for bloggers.

Hi Mike, thanks for the compliment, we are all working really hard to improve Thoof, and it is great to hear such positive feedback :-)

A question: What exactly would be your motivation for using such a button?

For example, would it be “bragging rights” if one of your blog entries achieved a high ThoofRank? Or would you use it out of curiosity, to get some feedback on the quality of your blog entries? Or perhaps its another reason we haven’t considered.

Understanding people’s motivation in using this type of thing will really help us in designing our version of it.

I hope that thoof will be most useful for people looking for articles on subjects they are interested in. A ranking system like this will give egoboo to people who post about popular interests. I’d be more interested in a Doctorow-esque whuffie system. By that I mean I would like to see how a site ranks among people who have similar interests to me.
On Last.fm I have “neighbors,” who are so designated due to their current similar musical taste. I’m sure I have thoof neighbors, both submitters and readers. If there were some way for me to know how many of our neighbors liked said neighbor’s stories, that would be helpful. As an example, say I like Linux and Punk rock. Some people will post articles about these subjects that no who likes Linux and Punk will want to read. Others will be very popular. If I navigated to a site with a badge that said lots of thoof users who like Linux and Punk like this site, I would know it was a site *I* might like. –Sorry so many words. Talking takes a lot of them. Oh, and I’m sure this would be difficult to implement. OK, I don’t really know, but it sounds hard.

Ack! I totally twisted the idea of whuffie. Sorry, Doctorow.

ian, I think it would be a bit of bragging rights, in addition I kinda think that it follows the scholarlly theme of thoof with the glasses logo. Having a percentage would be like getting a grade on a paper which would be cooler than the popularity point system of the likes of Digg, etc.

I’m mainly looking for feedback on the entries. Option 1 seems to be the most direct method of getting feedback. However, having said that, bragging rights matter a bit too, so I’d go with Option 3 to have both. ;)
